Characteristics and Consequences of Resource-Based Intervention Practices

The purpose of this initiative is to ascertain the relationship between specific characteristics of a resource-based approach to early childhood intervention and family support and different child, parent, and family outcomes. This is being done through extant database analyses of several different data sets that include indicators of resource-based intervention practices and the consequences of these practices CASEinPoint (Volume 2, Number 6).

Delphi Study of Resource-Based Intervention Practices Characteristics

The purpose of this study is to validate the key characteristics of resource-based intervention practices. A Delphi study is being conducted using a panel of experts as respondents to validate three resource-based intervention practice characteristics scales developed from available research evidence. Results will be used to construct both competencies that will serve as resource-based intervention practices benchmarks, and scales that can be used to measure the extent to which resource-based intervention practices are understood and utilized by practitioners and families CASEinPoint (Volume 2, Number 5), CASEtools (Volume 2, Number 3).

Resource-Based Intervention Practices Research Syntheses

The purpose of this initiative is to synthesize research findings regarding the relationship between the characteristics of resource-based intervention practices and both child and family outcomes. The syntheses are being conducted in ways identifying the relationship between specific practices and specific outcomes. Findings to date indicate that use of resource-based intervention practices results in positive outcomes for both children and families.

Case Studies of the Characteristics and Consequences of Resource-Based Intervention Practices

The purpose of this research is to determine the extent to which practitioners' use of resource-based intervention practices results in (1) parents' abilities to identify, access, and utilize both informal and formal resources, and (2) positive outcomes for children and families, including parents' increased sense of competence and personal control appraisals in procuring desired resources and achieving desired life conditions. Findings will be used to develop practice characteristics that will most likely produce the most positive benefits for children and families.

Characteristics and Consequences of Resource-Based Intervention Practices in a Rural Early Head Start Program

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which the use of resource-based intervention practices in an Early Head Start program results in positive outcomes for children and families. The study will be implemented in a rural county where Early Head Start services are provided using a combination center-based/home-based model. Surveys, interviews, and review of existing databases will be used to determine the extent to which practitioner implementation of resource-based intervention practices results in positive child and parent outcomes, including overall child development and participation and child literacy development; and parent confidence and competence. The Early Head Start program is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families.

Resource-Based Intervention Practices Training Study

The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which early childhood/family support practitioners' participation in resource-based intervention practices training results in positive outcomes for children and families. Training is being conducted using a multiple baseline design to test the hypothesis that training results in practitioners' use of resource-based intervention practices that result in positive outcomes for children and families.

Pathways to the Arts Evaluation Study

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which the use of resource-based intervention practices to plan and implement community-based art activities results in positive outcomes for children and families. The study is being implemented in a five-county area using multiple child, parent and practitioner outcome measures to examine the relationship between Pathways to the Arts practices and the consequences to young children and their families. The study is funded, in part, by the National Endowments for the Arts.
